Getting started tips for those who feel paralyzed by the news – 2/4/25

posted to personal Facebook on 2/4/25 in response to a really intense few days in the news cycle..

Start with what you know. Think about your profession, your passions, and the things you already know about and are participating in NOW.

Level those things up.

We don’t necessarily need start new things unless you’re literally doing nothing OR you genuinely feel you actually have brain space for new stuff (I sure as shit don’t the world is fucking chaotic no thank yew)

Examples! Bc I spent most of udergrad as an Ed major and never let teachering go 👩🏼‍🏫

✍🏼 If you wrote post cards for candidates before – level that up to canvassing. (Bean does it, it’s not scary)

📢 If you’ve been emailing your senators – level that up to calling or going to testify in person. (Nebraskans we need you on FRIDAY text me for deets plllzzzz)

♻️ If you’ve been recycling – level that up to composting. (I teach you, I teach you! It’s easy and it’s a coordinated effort to boost our city wide climate plan)

🙋🏼‍♀️ If you’ve been volunteering with a nonprofit, ask their staff or ED if there are ways to be connected with someone doing policy work for their goals. (I promise every nonprofit director EVER can steer you the right direction because our whole industry is just damage control until we have better policy)

And if you’re like oh shit I haven’t really done any of this I do literally need a step 0.1 – that’s fine. Start with one of the first things. Sometimes the problem is that we try and skip those basic things then get overwhelmed with the level up steps.

The only thing that is “wrong” right now is staying right where you are. We can all level up somehow and if we all do it I think Elon’s six chud bois are toast. 💅🏼
